dissenter"s reasons for not observing Good-friday and Christmas-day by James Hawkes Download PDF EPUB FB2

Good Friday, the Friday before Easter, the day on which Christians annually observe the commemoration of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. From the early days of Christianity, Good Friday was observed as a day of sorrow, penance, and fasting.

Learn. Good Friday is a Christian holiday commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus and his death at is observed during Holy Week as part of the Paschal Triduum on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday, and may coincide with the Jewish observance of is also known as Holy Friday, Great Friday, and Black Friday.

Members of many Christian denominations, including the Catholic, Eastern Date: The Friday immediately preceding Easter Sunday. Surprisingly, among all the well-researched answers here, nobody seems to have mentioned that both Christmas and Easter are borrowed (at least in part) from paganism and offer a spirituality deeply tainted with superstition.

In contrast, Good Frid. First Reading: Isaiah — 13 Behold, my servant shall prosper, he shall be exalted and lifted up, and shall be very high. 14 As many were astonished at him -- his appearance was so. WHY DO PRESBYTERIANS OBSERVE HOLY DAYS.

Samuel Miller, Professor of Ecclesiastical History and Church Government at Princeton Seminary wrote confidently in “Presbyterians do not observe Holy Days.” 1 Yet some years after the book in which Miller made that bold declaration was published, an informal survey of 30 churches in the Presbyterian Church in.

We read of the apostles observing the Lord's day, and keeping it holy, but not of any other. 3dly, These other days are left unrecorded, and uncertain, and so are concealed like the body of Moses, that men might not be tempted to abuse them to superstition.

4thly, These days have not the divine blessing upon them; for they are the occasions of. If you are a Christian, and you believe that the Lord Jesus Christ Is the Eternal Son Of God, and that He died for all your sins, then for you, Good Friday is the most sorrowful, the most solemn, and yet, one of the holiest days of the entire year.

Indeed, it is not a day for celebration, it 91%(). Early Christians celebrate Good Friday decades before Constantine the Great was born.

Irenaeus and Tertullian speak of Good Friday as the day of the Pasch. Irenaeus and Tertullian died in AD and AD respectively. Constantine was born almost half a century later in AD.

We cannot say exactly when Christians started observing Good Friday. they do not read of in the gospel, such as the observance of Candlemas, Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and the feast of Easter --William Sime, History of the Waldenses ().

Under the old dispensation, there were a number of days appointed for ceremonial observances. The Jews kept thirty-five in the year, but of these some fell on the Sabbath. Let us look only at Christmas, lent, Good Friday, and Easter. And as we look at these Romish festivals that people love so well, let us remember the words of our Saviour: " This people honoreth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me " (Mark ).

Presbyterian And Reformed Ambivalence About Christmas The Christmas season is nearing its climax. As the shopping ebbs and the work schedule slows a bit (for some anyway—remember in your prayers your local police and firefighters as this can be a difficult time for them) it gives us opportunity to think a bit about what we are doing and why.

20 Notes and Queries (hereafter cited as N. & Q), 1st ser., x (), 87 and The Gloucester mitre was carried before the bishop at the consecration of a church during the episcopate of James Monk, – Ibid., 2nd ser., v (), Third-hand memory of a ‘coronation mitre’ at Norwich cathedral in the s lingered into the early twentieth by:   I cannot believe Good Friday is not a federal holiday.

It is among the most important holiday for Christians, in some ways more important than Christmas Day. It is the day Jesus Christ was crucified. In all Christian majority nation, and even some non-Christians; Good Friday is a public/federal holiday, while in the U.S.

it isn't. This is. "The early Christians did not observe the festival of Christ's birth, to which they did not attach the importance ascribed to his death and resurrection" - Baker's Dictionary of Theology, p. Clearly, those who observe Christmas religiously are admitting that the Bible does not authorize the practice.

Both are related and matters Jesus Christ's purpose in this world. Good Friday is observed by Christians as the day to remember when Christ suffered and died on the Cross.

It was on a Friday. Good — because Christ accomplished the task by God, for. A common misunderstanding as we approach Easter is that Good Friday is a public holiday; Good Friday is a bank holiday but it is NOT a public holiday in Ireland.

Banks are closed on Good Friday and many businesses also close, but as it is not a public holiday there is. In England, both Christmas and Good Friday are public holidays.

In the US, Christmas is a Federal holiday, but not Good Friday. Christmas was declared a United States Federal holiday insigned into law by President Ulysses S. Grant. Why didn't he include Good Friday. We are off for Jesus' birth, but not his death/resurrection. I think it could have something to do with most people.

Good Friday and Christmas Day are also observed for religious reasons as government-imposed statutory holidays (Employment Standards Code, RSAc E-9, section 25).

It may be accepted in modern Canadian society that these days, and their Christian origins, must be viewed as secular days and events. This question has resonated through centuries of Christian history. No one can deny the great significance and importance of the holiday to many people.

Every year a seasonal barrage of movies, shows, and commercials heightens the holiday excitement. Cultural traditions such as ‘A Christmas Carol’, ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’, and ‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer’ are.

not xmas, not easter, not st. pattys day, not good friday, not st. valentines day, etc (do a Google search on the true origins of those "holidays") but the day on which the only-begotten son of "the only true God" Jehovah (John ) gave his life for those of humankind who choose the Kingdom of his Father over human self-rule (Matthew ).
